مضاحبه ای با DJ های معروف در رابطه با گسترش و سلطه House توسط Forbes

House Music Has Become a Global Phenomenon

About five years ago, one of my best friends introduced me to David Guetta, who has since become the ringleader for the house music phenomenon sweeping across the world. In the Documentary “Nothing But The Beat”, Guetta says “I wanted to create a bridge between Europe and America,” and he did just that. He saw house music as a way to bring urban and white culture together under one roof. Now signed to EMI Virgin Records, Guetta has proven that house music is here to stay.

In the mid 1980s and 1990s, house music became a major fixation on the UK music charts. In the past decade, house music has become very popular in America because many artists have crossed over to the mainstream. Young people are now more interested in the chorus and beat of a song over the words, something that house music has capitalized on. They grew up with hip-hop music with loud bass and house music is a natural progression for them.
Technology has had a profound impact on house music in a few ways. First, DJ’s have been able to easily download programs that already have beats and vocals so they’re able to create music cheaper and more efficiently. Second, many of them grew up with turntables so they learned early and their instruments are data files that can easily be tampered with to create new music. Finally, social media has allowed these artists to create global fan bases, where they can market themselves, their albums and their concerts.
The DJ’s have taken over pop culture by producing for America’s most prominent music figure heads and by immersing themselves in clubs and at major venues. David Guetta has produced hit tracks with تنها كاربران عضو مي توانند لينك ها را مشاهده كنند. , while Benny Benassi has worked with Chris Brown, and Calvin تنها كاربران عضو مي توانند لينك ها را مشاهده كنند. recently collaborated with Rihanna. Electronic music was able to break into pop culture because it attached itself to popular music, creating new beats, hooks and break downs. It’s been easier for DJ’s to draw an audience because they are elaborating on music that people already enjoy. Pop culture and house music are now intertwined more than ever before and the fans are loving it.

    Ultra Music Festival Miami 2011

DJ’s are quickly becoming the new celebrities and they are attracting young people by the thousands. And it’s no surprise because many of these DJ’s are also millennials. Avicii is 22 and Afrojack is 23 years old. The fans buy their merchandise, have their own language and use glow sticks to become part of the overall experience at concerts.

What is a typical day like for you? How do you manage your life?
It almost always involves a lot of travel; I’m almost never in the same place for more than 24 or 48 hours. I try to get as much sleep as I can during my flights, keep a healthy diet, and work out when I can so that I don’t get burnt out physically and mentally. My team does a great job help me keep my days in order too.
House music has taken off in America. Why has it taken so long?
It is very difficult to pinpoint exactly why, but I think a lot of elements have come together over the latest few years to make this possible –mainstream pop has adopting elements of dance music production, the incredible live shows, the support from college kids, to name a few.
What other artists/DJ’s influence your work? What have you learned from them?
I draw influence from a really broad range of artists and DJs, whether it is their melodies that are inspiring me or beats that you can see the crowds really reacting to. I’m always looking out for a new sounds and inspiration
How have you used social media to grow your brand and cultivate your fan base?
I have some of the best fans and I’m always on Twitter and Facebook whenever I can be seeing what my fans are saying and reaching out to them. I like to give as much as possible to my fans, whether it is competitions for clothes, tickets etc, giving them amazing content like for the video from my LA show last year, or by streaming gigs as I did via Twitter from Las Vegas in January which was amazing
What are your future projects and where do you see yourself in five years?
At the moment, I’m working on a new compilation album as well as my own next artist album. Outside of music I’m looking to expand my CLVB LIFE clothing line, and I’m working on a big announcement at the end of March. As everything is changing so much at the moment it is really difficult to see 5 years in the future. I hope that I’m having as much fun and am as inspired as I am right now! In the meantime, this year is definitely going to be an exciting one!

How did you originally get into house music and choose your stage name?
I got into house music thanks to dutch master mixer Ben Liebrand and my friends at school. It sounds really funny now, but Ben Liebrand was one of the first people to mix to records together. DJ’s used to talk in between records before 1974. In the Netherlands, dance music was already really big on radio in 1988 and 1989.
That was exactly the time that I grew up and was looking for my own identity. All my friends were listening to dance music and were buying records. I wasn’t old enough to go to clubs yet but I managed to be well informed by the radio shows on dutch radio.
My stage name has always been “Armin van Buuren”. When I really started DJ’ing professionally, I already had a few UK hits under my belt under the name “Armin”, so I couldn’t really change that anymore.
What is a typical day like for you? How do you manage your life?
It depends whether I’m on the road or not. If I’m on tour I usually get up early to catch a flight to the next destination. If the flight is later I try to go to the gym and catch up on work on my laptop.
When I arrive in the next destination, I usually go straight to bed to catch a “DJ nap” for my show. If I’m at home, I usually get up early to feed my daughter and to bring her to daycare. Then I usually lock myself up in the studio from 10am till 5pm. Once a week i have to do my radio show, a state of trance, usually on Wednesday night. I try to go running at least three times a week and spend at least a day without turning my laptop on and spend it with my wife and daughter.
House music has taken off in America. Why has it taken so long?
I think America had to find a way to make it their own. Funnily enough, house music was born in the USA (تنها كاربران عضو مي توانند لينك ها را مشاهده كنند. ), but then the Europeans made it kind of their sound.
It really blew up in Europe around 1999. Now that commercial radio in the USA has embraced the house sound, there’s no stopping anymore. It was amazing to see it grow and to see the American DJ’s and producers make the sound their own (like BT, Skrillex, etc)
What other artists/DJ’s influence your work? What have you learned from them?

In my early days, Ben Liebrand was a huge inspiration for me. I used to save all my money to try and buy equipment like him. I’ve been doing a radio show every week for more than 11 years. I get hugely inspired by all the new records I get sent. It’s fantastic to see the development in my sound (“Trance”).
The way producers used to make trance back in 1999 was totally different from the way it’s made now. Technology has always had a huge impact on the sound of dance music. Right now, many producers make their track totally “in the box”, which means they don’t use “outboard” gear anymore but everything within one DAW. I always try to closely listen to the new records that are hot and try to make that sound my own, without copying it.
In Trance music, there’s a huge influence at the moment from house and electro.
How have you used social media to grow your brand and cultivate your fan base?
Yes very much! The younger generation has embraced تنها كاربران عضو مي توانند لينك ها را مشاهده كنند. and تنها كاربران عضو مي توانند لينك ها را مشاهده كنند. massively and they spend most of their time on there. So if I want to reach new fans or keep in touch with my current, i try to use twitter and Facebook as much as possible.
But I’ve always been big with using early social media platforms in the early days of my radio show (2001-2004). Back then, IRC and MSN were big and I would use to log in to one of these to see what people were thinking of the tracks I was playing on my radio show. It’s always been very important to know exactly what your fans think and feel. Forums and message boards are always very handy but can be very confronting since people usually don’t use their own name. It’s important to have somebody in your organization to ****** out that information and give you only constructive criticism.

What are your future projects and where do you see yourself in five years?

I’m working on my 5th solo album and I’ve used finished a new mix compilation with four own new tracks on it. I will tour the globe to celebrate episode 550 of my radio show “A State of Trance” in march. All the events are broadcasted live and for free on تنها كاربران عضو مي توانند لينك ها را مشاهده كنند. .
In five years I still hope to make dance music. Maybe i will finally have a version of my solo DJ show “Armin Only” in Vegas? Or maybe I finally have my own 24/7 radio station with nothing but the best in trance and progressive.

How did you originally get into house music and choose your stage name? When I grew up, I lived in East Berlin and therefore I wasn’t really able to go to any clubs or to record stores. My musical education and introduction to electronic music came purely through the radio. But of course, when the wall went down I went to all the clubs and I became the biggest fan of electronic music – and this is pretty much how I started and how I got into it.What is a typical day like for you? How do you manage your life?I don’t really think there is a typical day. Obviously there’s a lot of touring and if I’m not on the road, I’m spending time either in the studio, working on music, or I’m in the office, making sure that everything runs as smoothly as possible.House music has taken off in America. It’s not really about something that has taken off in the last few years. I’ve been playing big festivals all over America since the mid 90’s, so it has always strong and it’s part of the global community that electronic music is. It developed from a small subculture into the biggest music culture today. How have you used social media to grow your brand and cultivate your fan base?Of course we use the social media possibilities to communicate and interact with our fans. This is the great thing that has happened in the new multimedia world –-that we have the chance to directly talk and interact with them. What are your future projects and where do you see yourself in five years?

I just finished my album, which is called EVOLUTION and it’s going to come out at the beginning of April. I’m really excited about it and this is my main project for this year. And in five years? Well I’m a musician, so I’m basically always making music, so let’s see what’s going to happen. Maybe I’ll be touring less and spending more time in the studio. As of now, like I’ve said: For me right now my album EVOLUTION is my main professional target for this year so I will be touring all over the world again.
